Sky activating Broadband Shield porn filter for new customers

Sky has announced that it is to turn the Sky Broadband Shield adult content blocker on by default.

As of 2016, new Sky broadband customers will find that adult content is blocked by default. Up to now, new Sky broadband customers have been asked whether they want to activate the Sky Broadband Shield feature during the setup process.

The Sky Broadband Shield was launched in November 2013 to help filter out adult websites from being accessible in the home. It can be set to work at three levels of censorship: PG, 13, or 18, and it’s possible to customise when each level comes into effect.

Come the New Year, this Sky Broadband Shield feature will be set by default to 13 until 9pm, and then to 18 thereafter. Customers can tweak or deactivate these settings by logging into MySky.

Sky has been pushing towards a default Sky Broadband Shield activation since the beginning of the year. Earlier in 2015, it emailed all long-term Sky Broadband customers who hadn’t made a choice on whether to activate the Sky Broadband Shield. If there was no response, the system was automatically activated.

If you’re not a fan of Sky’s approach here, it’s worth noting that some 62 percent of Sky Broadband customers have opted to keep some form of parental control in place. Sky says that this represents “significantly higher engagement than any other broadband provider.”
