I thought you only had to sell 600,000 units to go platinum.
There cant be no doubt that the DS has sold a whole load of consoles, 14 million in Europe and over 50 million worldwide says it all. Part of that could be because Nintendo keeps on refreshing the line with upgraded versions, like the transition from DS to DS Lite and inclusion of the black and (horrible) pink coloured models.
Not content with three colour choices, the DS is soon to be available in a fourth, this time silver. Coming on the 12th of October, just one week prior to the release of what promises to be, for want of a less hyperbolic word, an awesome game, namely The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
Okay, so the two releases are almost entirely unrelated, but it is testimony to the quality of titles that Nintendo is producing. For every great game on the PSP I can name three on the DS and the sales figures reflect that. Of course the PSP is getting its own ‘Lite’ version soon, but Sony will need a miracle to catch up now.
The SRP of the new silver DS will be the standard £99 that we have become accustomed to for the last few months and if you don’t own a system already I can only recommend that you see the error of your ways, have your head examined, and buy one. If you need an excuse, blame it on magpie instinct.
Nintendo press release.
