Shenmue 3 development is “just getting started”

Yu Suzuki is “eternally grateful” for fan support as development on Shenmue 3 finally begins.

Yu Suzuki, creator of the Shenmue series, has confirmed that the development on the third game has “just started getting into development.”

The developer is “eternally grateful” for the continuous fan support shown throughout Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter campaign, which drew to a close last week.

Suzuki went on to praise his fans in a recent Kickstarter update.

“Through the illustrations you drew, the videos you produced, and all that you did throughout the campaign, I could not help but feel the deep love you have for Shenmue,” he said.

“Even after 14 years have gone by, to see this outpouring of support is something one as a creator can only dream of. There can be no better feeling than what you have given me, and for that I will be eternally grateful.”

“We have just started getting into development, and as we move ahead, I will listen to all of you to make Shenmue III even better. I thank you again all for your support, and wholeheartedly look forward to the rest of our journey together.”

Shenmue 3 became the fastest game to reach $1 million and also the most-funded video game project in Kickstarter history. The campaign concluded with a total of $6,333,295 raised.

Yu Suzuki revealed during the campaign that he would need at least $10 million in funding to create a “true open world game,” but with Sony lending a helping hand, this could become a reality.

Sony Computer Entertainment will help fund, market and produce the game throughout its development, as a result, Shenmue 3 will be coming first to PS4.

Shenmue 3 is due to release on PC and PS4 by the end of 2017, there is no word yet if the game will be coming to Xbox One.
