Shazam music recognition app comes to Apple Mac

Shazam, the popular music recognition app, has stepped outside of its mobile world for the first time with a new Apple Mac app.

Unlike the mobile app, which requires you to whip out your smartphone, boot up the app, and hit the Shazam button to find out what’s playing in the radio – often a frantic experience – Shazam for Mac is always listening in the background.

Or at least, it can be set to do so when you first boot it up. If the concept of an app that’s constantly listening sounds too spooky to you, it’s possible to use it more like the mobile app in controlled doses.

As such, Shazam quietly forms a playlist of everything it hears over time, offering subtle notifications when it finds something new.

Once you’ve discovered what you’re listening to on that ad, TV show, or radio program, Shazam for Mac gives you one-click access to related music videos, lyrics (on the newly revamped Shazam website), and iTunes listings so that you can buy the track.

If you’re wondering why the Shazam app has arrived on OS X and not Windows, you only have to look at the special partnership that Apple and Shazam have enjoyed over the years. Indeed, it’s a partnership that will see Shazam tightly incorporated into the forthcoming iOS 8, with access granted through a press of your iPhone’s home button.

Still, a Windows version of the Shazam desktop app has not been ruled out by the company – especially if this new Mac app proves to be a success.

Shazam for Mac is available now as a free download from the App Store.
