The key is in not changing the fundamental factors which made it a hit in the first place...
I get caught in two minds when I hear a classic game, movie or TV show is being remade. Sometimes it works (Battlestar Galatica), but most of the time it fails (list too long to mention).
Consequently, I’m cautious about what is going to happen to Sensible Soccer, one of my all time favourite games titles which has just announced its resurrection, especially in the light of the disastrous attempt to relaunch the legendary Kick Off series of the early 90s a few years back. Unlike that stuffed turkey however, the new edition of Sensible Soccer will not try and alter the angled top down view which made the game so popular first time around.
It will also stick to the same lightening fast arcade football action, going against the trend for greater realism preached by Pro Evolution Soccer and recent convert FIFA. Instead Sensible Soccer will have go for superhuman dribbling, physics defying slide tackles and – most famously – a “huge amount of unbelievable goals” (the developers’ words, not mine). Visually, even the cartoonish enlarged heads of the players in the first game will remain. So clearly we are looking at a tribute here, rather than a reinterpretation which actually fills my heart with joy. The fact that original Sensible Soccer designer and producer Jon Hare is behind the project also widens my smile.
Dream teams, leagues, cups and a custom career mode are all on offer as well as a system of unlocks and upgrades which are attainable after certain numbers of wins. I’m determined not to jinx this development by getting too eager, but when it debuts for PS2, Xbox and PC in Q2 next year (in time for the 15 year anniversary of the original) I hope to invite round a few long time mates, put Guns N Roses on the stereo and issue dead arm punches every time I concede a goal.
