Sensel Morph is a next-gen touch interface for your laptop

Our mobile devices are more intuitive than ever, with the likes of Force Touch detecting how hard we press. So why are we stuck with the ageing keyboard and mouse for our laptops and desktops?

This wants to replace them as our input device of choice. It’s called the Sensel Morph, and it’s basically a big trackpad that allows for a much greater range of input methods.

It packs 20,000 sensors, each capable of detecting the full range of forces our hands are capable of. It’ll tell how many fingers you’re using to touch it, where they are and how hard you’re pressing.

The firm has come up with a range of tactile overlays that you lay on top of the Morph which then change it into all kinds of different devices. There’s a keyboard one, ones for musical instruments, and many more. They fit in place using magnets, with the Morph detecting them and changing mode accordingly.

It’s compatible with your computer using a USB cable, and your phone and tablet using Bluetooth.

It could be very useful for music and gaming, but that’s just the start. The firm is making an online tool that lets you design your own overlay for whatever use you want.

It has great potential, but it relies on the software makers getting their operating systems and apps up to date to handle the full range of inputs. When they do, the keyboard and mouse will look as cutting edge as the spinning jenny.

It’s shot past its funding goal and will ship in June next year.
