Look out Nokia N810...
WiMAX seems about as popular in the UK as chocolate tax but that hasn’t stopped Samsung pushing out yet another compatible handset.
In truth looking as much MID as smartphone, the leaked ‘SWD-M100’ or ‘Mondi’ appears to be a direct rival to the much promoted but largely ignored Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. It combines a Qwerty keyboard with D-pad and a large (though unspecified) touchscreen which is likely on par with the 4.13 inches seen in the N810.
The likes of onboard memory and storage, expansion slots, battery life, even the OS (though I suspect Windows Mobile 6.x not Android) have yet to be divulged but we do at least know 3G connectivity will augment the tough sell of Intel’s latest wireless brainchild.
The other interesting aspect to this device is news it will be coming to the US which suggests a wider pan-European roll out is in its future, quite whether this includes WiMAX-meh-land such as the UK however is another matter entirely.
As for availability and pricing, an educated guess says within the next couple of months and expect primary targets to be the N810 and HTC Athena 2 rather than the more netbook-esque OQO model 2+. So will Samsung’s involvement in this relatively dormant product sector spur it into life or just prove there’s no need for a bridging device between smartphone and netbook? I suspect we’ll soon see…
