Samsung Turtle Glass could land as Gorilla Glass rival

These days, most manufacturers protect their smartphone displays with Corning’s hardy Gorilla Glass.

To contest this apparent monopoly, it appears that Samsung may be working on its own version of the protective glass.

Samsung’s display division has filed registration documents with the PanKorea Patent & Law Firm to trademark “Turtle Glass”.

According to a report by Sammobile, the trademark suggests the moniker will be used for protective displays.

It will supposedly be used to protect a range of mobile devices, including smartphones, tablets, cameras, and music players.

Samsung is keen to own as much of its supply chain as possible, so moving protective glass in-house makes sense for the firm.

Similarly, Samsung has used its own custom-built Exynos mobile chips in its flagship smartphones – the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, for instance – as opposed to previos years where Qualcomm’s Snapdragon-series processors were the chipsets of choice.

The news of Samsung-built glass also comes at an interesting time as, earlier this week, separate display-related news broke that revealed the company may be working on a foldable phone.

According to the report, Samsung will be unveiling a smartphone with a foldable display in January – launching at CES 2016, perhaps?
