Samsung has reportedly begun testing on an innovative three-sided display technology.

That's according to one Korean parts supplier, as reported by Zdnet Korea.

Such a three-sided device has been rumoured from Samsung for some time now. One such report came back in February, when an analyst predicted that Samsung would roll out such a device in a limited quantity at the end of 2014.

It seems as if this three-sided smartphone utilises a plastic substrate that is currently difficult to produce. This is one reason why the device will probably only see release in limited quantity, and probably only in Samsung's native South Korean market.

If that all sounds a little far-fetched, then it should be noted that Samsung recently hinted that something a little different was in the works.

During Samsung's recent Q2 earnings call, executive manager Kim Hyeon Jun said: "While I cannot mention specifics, we are planning on unveiling an innovative large-screen flagship model, an attractive phone that takes advantage of cutting-edge materials."

It should also be noted that the company has been known to indulge in experimental screen designs in the past. The Samsung Galaxy Round, for example, was a 5.7-inch smartphone with a curved display.

Beating the LG G Flex to market, the Samsung Galaxy Round allowed certain glanceable information to be revealed when the phone was laid flat and rocked towards the user.

Gimmicky? Yes. But we're glad that at least one company is in a position to take such risks.
