Samsung starts supplying remote Galaxy S7 assistance

Samsung has updated its Samsung+ app for all of its mobile devices, but there’s a particularly interesting remote assistance feature for Samsung Galaxy S7 users.

You might not have even registered the Samsung+ app’s existence – it doesn’t come preinstalled on all Samsung phones. But the newly released version 3.0 of the app could change all that.

In particular, Samsung Assist is a new feature of the app that could prove transformative. Not only can you live chat with a Samsung support operative, but it’s also possible to hand over remote control of your handset to them so that they can initiate any changes or fixes directly.

If such a feature is ringing any bells with you, then you’re probably being reminded of Amazon’s similar MayDay feature for its Fire devices.

All you need to grant the customer service operative access is to provide them with a one-off secure code, and a link will be established. They will then ask for verbal permission every time they want to make a change to your settings.

At the moment, such a feature is only available on the new Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but it’s sure to spread out to more Samsung devices in time.

Aside from this headline feature, Samsung+ also includes a diagnostic tool for maximising the speed and battery life of your phone. It’ll also provide tips on setting up and fully exploiting your Samsung phone, and these will change throughout your ownership.

But it’s that new Samsung Assist feature that looks likely to be the most useful, at least for light or casual users. It’s a neat solution to one of the biggest gaps between Samsung and Apple – customer support. Unlike Apple, Samsung doesn’t have its own extensive network of branded shops you can walk into for help, but it can now bring that assistance directly to you.
