Samsung has announced that it has commenced production of a super-fast new type of memory.

The South Korean manufacturer has issued a press release revealing that it is now mass producing "the industry's first 4-gigabyte (GB) DRAM package based on the second-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) interface."

If your eyes glazed over in that last paragraph, all you need to know is that this is a blisteringly fast new kind of memory technology. In fact, it's said to be more than seven times faster than current DRAM standards.

To be a little more specific, Samsung's new DRAM package boasts 256GBps of bandwidth. That represents a seven-fold increase over the 36GBps bandwidth of a current 4Gb GDDR5 DRAM chip.

The result of this will be faster response times for high-end computing tasks, including parallel computing, graphics rendering and machine learning.

This means that everything from top end computer servers right down to gaming rigs have the potential to be improved by Samsung's new DRAM package.

On the matter of gaming, the new package's combination of high performance, energy efficiency and small dimensions make it perfect for next-gen graphics cards. Samsung reckons that its new DRAM package will allow the likes of Nvidia and AMD to make "space savings of more than 95 percent" on their graphics cards.
