Samsung Smart TVs to get PlayStation Now game streaming

Sony and Samsung have announced a partnership which will see the PlayStation Now game streaming service arrive on Samsung’s Smart TVs next year.

Sony says (via Engadget) over 200 PlayStation 3 games will be able to stream via the service without the need for a games consoles or downloads, from the second half of 2015.

The app, which is the first for a non-Sony device, will be available through the Samsung Smart Hub on select televisions and can be paired with a DualShock 4 controller.

The games will be available in full and will include the ability to notch up trophies and achievements, online multi-player and cloud game saves.

The service will be previewed on Smart TVs at the Samsung booth during the CES 2015 expo next month, with attendees able to take the service for a spin.

“Since we first introduced PlayStation Now at CES 2014, our vision has been to open the world of PlayStation to the masses by offering the service on the devices they use every day,” Masayasu Ito, Executive Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc said in a press release on Thursday.

“Partnering with Samsung is a key step toward realizing this vision, as we can reach a broader audience of consumers who may not own a PlayStation console to show them why gaming with PlayStation is such a unique and amazing experience.”

Sony’s deal with Samsung opens the window for manufacturers to jump on board with the platform. Sony had hoped the PlayStation Now platform would serve as an incentive for users to stick with its hardware, but now it seems to have broadened its horizons somewhat.

Brits are still waiting for PlayStation Now, with a beta launch expected in 2015. Hopefully we’ll get more news on that from Sony at CES too.
