Samsung has patented a potential new wearable device called the Samsung Smart Bangle.
With two wrist-worn wearable models already on the market, the Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear Fit, it looks like the South Korean electronics giant it looking to branch out further in the future.
From the looks of the extensive patent filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office, Samsung’s Smart Bangle should be a wider display version of the Gear Fit, making it easier to view and run applications.
The Smart Bangle includes a motion sensor that can change the direction the content is displayed in.
Apparently, you’ll also be able to use gesture controls with this new Samsung wearable, with certain commands given by raising your arm in a certain way or with a flick or rotate or your wrist.
Samsung outlines in the patent that holding a particular gesture could let you scroll through the various screens associated with that command.
In particular apps, such as Maps and Photos, rotating the Smart Bangle will enable them to zoom in. With the zooming rotation option enabled, you could potentially zoom into a map location by rotating your wrist in one direction or another.
Some of the Bangle’s hardware features may include a sophicasted, but tiny camera. This should be used to unlock or lock your new wearable.
According to the patent, this camera would use a facial recognition function to unlock the Smart Bangle, detecting your eyes on the display.
However, the Smart Bangle would also recognise to come out of standby when you raise your wrist to your face to view the screen, with the facial recognition then activated as well. When naturally lowering your arm, the Smart Bangle would then go into sleep mode to preserve battery life.
This certainly sounds like an development of the existing Samsung wearables, and hopefully should provide a little more functionality than the current models.
