Samsung has announced an 11.6in convertible tablet that will run Windows 8. The upcoming Series 5 model has a magnetic keyboard dock so it can also work as a conventional laptop-style device, similar to the Asus Transformer range.

The tablet is said to have a battery life of around 10 hours – though it also has to power the keyboard when attached as the accessory doesn’t have its own power source.

According to PC Pro, there may be two versions of the Series 5 tablet, "one with Intel's new 32nm Atom processor, dubbed Clover Trail, and another with a higher performing Core iX processor."

The site reports that the tablet also shares Samsung’s S-Pen and S-Memo technology, imported from the Galaxy Note Android smartphone. The product is finished off in light brushed metal, like Samsung’s Series 7 Slate, its Windows 7 tablet.

In terms of connectivity, both Series 5 models are expected to have Micro SD, USIM, Micro HDMI, USB 3.0 and a 3.5mm headphone output. There’s also a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear camera with flash, though some features could change.

The Clover Trail model is reported to weigh 750g, while the higher spec Core iX version is heavier at 870g. Other key specs are yet to be revealed, as are pricing and availability.

PC Pro also says that Samsung will soon roll out a Series 7 all-in-one desktop PC that will ship with Windows 8. It will have a slim, metal body and a touchscreen with 10-finger multitouch support as well as the voice recognition and hand gesture control systems also used in the company’s high-end Smart TVs.
