Samsung sets its focus on wearable tech for 2014

Having reportedly lowered its projected smartphone forecast for the coming year, latest reports have suggested Samsung will refocus its 2014 efforts on wearables and smartphone accessories.

With sales of the Samsung Galaxy S4 continuing to fall below expectations, Samsung is said to have reduced its 2014 sales forecasts to a still lofty 330 million units.

Anticipating lower interest in new smartphones next year as the market hits saturation point, the Korean manufacturer is reportedly looking to new avenues in order to maintain profitability.

Having launched the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch earlier this year, it is widely expected that Samsung will refocus some of its mobile efforts to growing its share of the peripheral market in the coming year.

According to reports out of the manufacturer’s native Korea a Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 is already in the works ahead of a launch alongside the much mooted Samsung Galaxy S5 during the first quarter of the coming year.

Elsewhere, a recently approved design patent revealed the company to be working on its answer to Google Glass, with sports specs named ‘Gear Glass’.

Samsungs ‘Gear Glass’ patent showcased a wearable set of spectacles that contain integrated earphones for listening to music and also possess the ability to act as a hands free headset for taking calls whilst on the move.

With all of these features made possible by pairing the sports glasses with a Samsung branded smartphone via a physical micro-usb link, it’s clear that the Apple rival is more committed than ever to breaking ground in the peripheral technology market.

Samsung has yet to announce a release date for either the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 or its rumoured Gear Glass project, however, both devices are expected to be unveiled sometime in 2014.
