Samsung’s first 4K player goes on sale in UK – for £430?!

The 4K revolution is well under way, and Ultra HD Blu-ray players are the next big thing – or so Samsung hopes.

Samsung has officially launched its first-ever Ultra HD Blu-ray player in the UK.

The depressingly named UBD-K8500 is a HDR-compatible player that will play 4K discs at four times the resolution of standard Blu-ray.

Of course, you’ll need the requisite 4K television to go with it, plus Ultra-HD Blu-ray movies too – Universal might have you covered on that front.

The UBD-K8500 is available to buy right now directly from Samsung, and is also on sale at Currys, John Lewis, and Richer Sounds. It has a recommended retail price of £429.99.

That might sound like a lot but, in fairness to Samsung, Panasonic's first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player has an R.R.P of £749.99 (discounted to £625.99) on Amazon UK. Ouch.

“At Samsung, we’re committed to developing technology that creates the best possible entertainment experience,” says Robert King, Samsung’s VP of Consumer Electronics in the UK and Ireland.

King continues: “With the launch of our first UHD Blu-ray player, users can enjoy a wide range of movies and shows in outstanding quality, sharp resolution and brilliant colour, without Wi-Fi bandwidth restrictions.”

This one has issues with HDR (colours looking wrong on some TVs) and the Panny has issues with drop-outs on Atmos soundtracks.

Hopefully both fixable with firmware but who knows when?
