Samsung opts to keep mobile chief after all

Samsung has opted against the leadership shake-up that it was rumoured to be considering, leaving under-fire mobile chief J.K. Shin in place.

Just last week a report emerged claiming that Samsung was considering handing control of its mobile division over to B.K. Yoon, the company’s home appliance and television boss.

This move would have seen the high-profile removal of J.K. Shin from his position as mobile chief and – quite probably – co-CEO of the whole company.

That dramatic reshuffle has not come to pass, however. As the WSJ points out, all of Samsung’s top executives have kept their positions.

It seems Samsung has kept faith with Shin, the man who oversaw the company’s rise to dominance of the mobile phone market in recent years. However, the company’s profits have fallen by 60 percent during the third quarter of 2014.

With mobile still representing the largest slice of Samsung’s income, there was the very real possibility of Shin being relieved of his duties irrespective of his past record. Indeed, one suspects that there still is if things don’t improve in 2015.

Some have speculated that the relative lack of change in the Samsung executive hierarchy is down to Chairman Lee Kun-hee being in hospital following a heart attack in May.
