Samsung has announced the availability of the first bendable UHD TV in its native South Korea.

The company first took the wraps off its flexible creation, aptly referred to as the Samsung Bendable TV, back at CES in January.

Now it's been announced that the Samsung Bendable TV will go on sale in Korea on August 1.

The model that will hit shops tomorrow will actually be slightly different to the one Samsung showed off at CES. Whilst that was an 85-inch model, this initial retail version will 'only' be 78-inch.

Users will be able to select whether they want to watch TV or a film on a traditional flat plane or with concave curved view. That might sound like a bit of a gimmick aimed at justifying heavy investment in flexible screen technology, but there may be something to be said for offering such an option.

While the argument for the greater immersiveness of a giant curved TV may be compelling, there's always the worry that it won't be practical for general TV viewing at a range of angles. With the Samsung Bendable TV, that won't be an issue, as you'll be able to adjust the curvature to suit the situation.

There doesn't appear to be any news on pricing as yet, but you can bet that the Samsung Bendable TV will be prohibitively expensive.

Earlier this month, Samsung's great local rival LG showed off a bendable OLED screen that was flexible enough to be rolled up like a poster. While that 18-inch model was far from the finished article, it shows how far flexible display technology has come - and how close we are to being able to roll up our 50-inch TV sets when we've finished with them for the night.
