Samsung launches 4K FreeSync monitors

Samsung has released two new 4K monitors featuring AMD FreeSync support.

The Samsung U24E590D and U28E590D have been announced with a feature set that’s sure to be a hit with gamers.

Both monitors boast UHD resolutions (3840 x 2160), so are ideal for outputting high-end games at 4K (if your PC is up to the task). But perhaps more importantly, both monitors have AMD FreeSync support.

AMD FreeSync is a standard that synchronises a monitor’s refresh rate with the graphics card. The result is smoother performance, and elimination of screen tearing and stuttering.

That’s provided you have a compatible AMD graphics card, of course. Rather annoyingly, Nvidia has its own solution called G-Sync.

Still, we found AMD’s standard to be mightily impressive when we reviewed it back in April. That it’s now supported by one of the biggest monitor makers in the business can only be good news.

Besides FreeSync, the 24-inch Samsung U24E590D and 28-inch Samsung U28E590D both benefit from maximum brightness levels of 370cd/m2. Picture-in-picture is also supported, while connectivity includes DP and HDMI 2.0.

The U28E590D also benefits from a 1ms response time, which will be of interest to hardcore gamers. Another benefit of the 28-inch model is support for one billion unique colours – that’s around 64 times greater than conventional monitors.

The U28E590D is listed as available now, and costs $599.99 (around £379), while the U24E590D will be available from July 26 for $399.99 (around £252).
