Having targeted your wrist, Samsung is now pushing its wearable efforts at your face as the Samsung Gear VR is officially unveiled.
A VR headset of sorts, the Gear VR requires the newly unveiled Galaxy Note 4 to work. The 5.7-inch QHD display hosting handset slots into the Gear VR’s front to act as the expansive screen.
Unlike the Oculus Rift, the VR is a simplistic shell, with all of the computing power coming from the Note. This is a device for casual use rather than being a new gaming format.
Samsung Gear VR Features
Capable of being used for playing VR games, watching films and being engrossed in 360-degree visual content, the Samsung Gear VR will land as a separately purchasable accessory.
With your smartphone clipping in to a docking port on the front of the headset, an outer shell then slots over the Note to keep it safe. Navigational controls are handled by a small, square touchpad on the side of the VR unit.
An Android inspired back button and physical volume contols also feature on the device’s right edge.
While Samsung has announced it is working with DreamWorks on early content partnerships, it is unclear how much further compatible content will be available at launch.
For those with sight issues, fret not. An optical dial on the headset’s upper edge help adjust the lens for near and far sighted users.
Samsung Gear VR Release Date and Price
Although set to launch alongside the Note 4 later this year, an exact the Gear VR release date is still unclear.
Pricing is also yet to be divulged. Despite its lack of computing power, don’t expect it to be cheap though. Also look out for bundle deals.
