Samsung Gear VR for Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge arrives next month

Samsung has announced the new iteration of the Gear VR virtual reality headset, designed for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge handsets, will become available in the U.S. next month.

The Korean firm says (via Engadget) it’ll be available to pre-order from Best Buy’s website on Friday. Samsung hasn’t confirmed a price yet, but it’s likely to be $200 like the previous iteration for the Note 4.

The device will be available for sale from the site on May 8, while it’ll arrive at Best Buy brick and mortar stores on May 15.

Samsung’s new version of the Innovator Edition has been optimised for the new devices, which boast a qHD Super AMOLED display with a pixel density of 577ppi.

The revamped, Oculus-powered VR headset is also smaller, has newly redesigned head straps, and a fan that’ll hopefully make it more enjoyable to wear.

The announcement comes after it emerged a 2015 release for the long-awaited Oculus Rift started to look like a longshot.

During Facebook’s Q1 earnings call on Wednesday evening the company said: “We have not announced any specific plans for shipment volumes for 2015 related to Oculus… Oculus is very much in the development stage and it’s too early to be talking about large shipment volumes.”

That means the highly-rated HTC Vive headset, built in collaboration with Valve, is likely to beat the Oculus Rift to market.

After pioneering the modern VR movement, it looks like the market will be awash with alternatives before Oculus gets the Rift on shelves.
