Samsung Gear S UK release date confirmed alongside hefty price tag

The Samsung Gear S UK release date has been confirmed with the oversized smartwatch set to hit retailers this Friday, November 7.

With the Tizen-based wearable having been unveiled at IFA 2014 last month, the Moto 360 rival has now been confirmed for launch alongside a ridiculously high, £329 price tag.

“This is an exciting and dynamic time for the wearable technology category and we are delighted  to be leading the innovation drive, delivering products that truly redefine the mobile experience for customers by offering greater flexibility and freedom on the move,” Ines van Gennip, Samsung UK’s Marketing Director for IT and Mobile said in making the announcment.

“Combining a sleek, stylish design and Super AMOLED screen with 3G connectivity, the Samsung Gear S is the ultimate smart wearable device.”

While news of the nearing Gear S release date is sure to excite many consumers, the watch’s lofty price tag might not.

At £329 the Gear S, which is Samsung’s sixth wearable offering in just 12 months, will set wannabe owners back £130 more than the Moto 360, and close to £200 more than the LG G Watch.

This added cost is sure to be in part down to the device’s inbuilt 3G connectivity options. Shunning synced smartphones, the Gear S has the ability to act as a standalone device. With integrated Wi-Fi
connectivity and room for a 3G SIM card, the wrist wear can make and
receive calls without the need for a synced smartphone.

Requiring a separate 3G plan to your phone – that’s even more expense – the Gear S will be available through Samsung Stores and O2 at launch.

Having overlooked Android Wear in favour of its own Tizen platform, Samsung has fitted the Gear S with a wrist dominating 2-inch curved AMOLED display.

This sizeable panel is paired with a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage.
