The Samsung Gear Glass augmented reality headset could launch at IFA 2014 in September to rival the Google Glass.

Patents for a Samsung wearable headset emerged in April, but now rumour has it those will be made into reality later this year.

According to reports coming out of the Korean media, Samsung will launch its Gear Glass wearable in September during the Berlin-based IFA conference.

This could mean that we see the Gear Glass unveiled alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which is expected to arrive at the same event.

The earlier patents suggest the Gear Glass will feature an ear piece and HUD presented on a display in front of your right eye.

Unlike the Google Glass, the patent indicates the Gear Glass display will be attached to the earpiece rather than on a pair of glasses.

The Korean media sources state that Samsung has “secured a considerable amount of smart glass-related technology and patents” for the Gear Glass.

Samsung had already confirmed its plans to launch its own Google Glass rival early in 2014.

“The new smart glass to be introduced by Samsung is a new concept of wearable device that can lead to an exciting culture of communication,” said a Samsung Display official.

“The smart glass will present our aim to lead the new market with proven capability. Wearable devices can’t generate profits immediately. Steady releases of devices are showing our firm commitment as a leader in new markets.”

Whether Samsung will actually release a Google Glass rival later this year will have to be seen to be believed. It does already have a number of wearables to its name though, including the Samsung Gear Fit and the Samsung Gear 2.
