Samsung's answer to the new Retina Display iPad may launch tomorrow at SXSW in Texas. It reportedly offers everything the iPad has and more, if you believe the pre-release hype.
According to Pocket-lint, which has talked to an unnamed source in the know, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 11.6 may launch tomorrow at a confirmed "special announcement." It takes place at 10pm GMT, or 4pm if you're planning on cruising through SXSW in Texas.
Until now, the only announced 2012 Samsung rivals to the new iPad are the distinctly so-so Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Galaxy Note 10.1. Nice, but hardly iPad-squishers. The Galaxy Tab 11.6, however, is rumoured to offer a 2,560 x 1,600 pixel display and a 2GHz dual-core Exynos chip. This processor could potentially outclass the new iPad's offering in some benchmarks - although the difference is unlikely to be all that dramatic.
The screen resolution is higher too, but the pixel density is very similar - as the 11.6in screen is significantly larger than the new iPad's 9.7in model, more pixels are needed to attain the same sharpness. This is not the first time has made Samsung made "Apple-apeing" moves - Apple considered the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 so similar to the iPad in design that it started a law suit against the manufacturer. However, in our opinion the two are distinctly different devices.
If the Samsung Galaxy Tab 11.6 is as impressive as rumours suggest, this model could become one of the best-selling tablets of 2012. But we ask - isn't 11.6in a little on the large side for a casual tablet?
SXSW, where Samsung's announcement will be made, is an annual music, film and interactive gubbins festival-conference hybrid held in Austin, Texas.
