Samsung Galaxy S8 to battle iPhone 7 with 4K screen, dual-lens camera?

A Samsung Galaxy S8 rumour? In June?! It’s not the first, and it certainly won’t be the last.

Samsung’s next flagship smartphone – the Galaxy S8 – is going to launch with a dual-lens camera, according to a new report. It’s also claimed that the phone will feature a 4K display – a first for the Galaxy series. That’s according to a news report from the Chinese news site 163.com, which cites unnamed sources.

The report describes how Samsung is “naturally unwilling to be left behind”. That’s because there have been an abundance of rumours that Apple’s iPhone 7 will feature a dual-lens camera when it launches in September, and the Huawei P9 already sports the next-gen technology. Interestingly, the upcoming Galaxy Note 6 (or Note 7?) has also been tipped to feature a dual-lens camera.

The report also cites sources on Chinese social media service Weibo as suggesting the new phone will use a 4K/UHD display. This has long been rumoured to be the case, mainly to improve Samsung’s prospects in the VR space. Now that virtual reality has taken off, the pixel density of smartphone displays is becoming increasingly important. Samsung is invested in the space with its Gear VR, so a move to 4K screens would be no great surprise.

Naturally, due to the nature of these reports, it’s tough to verify their legitimacy. As such, take any early leaks regarding the Galaxy S8 with a healthy degree of caution; there’s a good chance this latest leak is little more than hearsay or speculation. That said, the features rumoured seem like common sense for a 2017 flagship – only time will tell.

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S8 next year, likely around Mobile World Congress 2017, which runs from February 27 to March 2. However, the company has not officially announced any such plans yet.
