Every Samsung Galaxy S8 could have a curved screen

Samsung may abandon flat screens completely as the mobile giant reportedly contemplates a curved-only Galaxy S8.

A new report out of Korea suggests that Samsung is considering “ditching a flat-screen version” for the upcoming Galaxy S8, which is due to launch early next year. The generally reliable Korea Herald cites “industry sources” who are familiar with the matter.

Apparently, the decision is borne out of the success of the Galaxy S7 Edge, which has outpaced the flat-screened Galaxy S7 in terms of sales. The Galaxy Note 7, which was only available in a curved-screen variant, also saw great success, despite ditching the traditional flat-screen display.

According to the Herald’s sources, Samsung has already started securing curved displays in 5.1-inch and 5.5-inch variants, procuring them from the its own Samsung Display division. That makes sense – after all, Samsung Display is the only producer of this type of screen right now.

Samsung is likely keen to ensure it has plenty of supply for the launch of the Galaxy S8. Back in 2015, Samsung faced low display yields, which led to hampered Galaxy S6 Edge sales – and not for want of demand. After the success of this year’s flagship phones, it’s likely that Samsung will ship a shedload of Galaxy S8 handsets, so it’s no surprise that the firm is already turning out components so early.
