Samsung Galaxy S8 could borrow Note 7’s oversized screen

Samsung is plotting new ways of wooing disheartened Note 7 customers with next year’s flagship, apparently.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 will feature a larger display than its predecessor, according to a new report. South Korean news outlet The Investor – a business blog from the Korea Herald – claims that the new model, expected to launch early next year, will come in two variants: 5.7 inches and 6.2 inches.

By contrast, the Galaxy S7 was only available in a 5.1-inch variant, while the Galaxy S7 Edge shipped with a 5.7-inch display. But it’s important to remember that the Galaxy S7 Edge outsold the S7 in many markets, and that may partly be thanks to its larger display.

The Galaxy Note 7 also featured a 5.7-inch screen, which is a big part of the phone's appeal (or was, prior to the recall). Samsung generally aims for power users with its Note series, providing enhanced features that don’t normally appear on the standard S7 models: an iris scanner or S-Pen stylus, for instance.

There’s been plenty of talk in recent weeks about Samsung being keen to utilise the Galaxy S8 as a tool to mitigate fallout from the Galaxy Note 7 recall. If you hadn’t heard, Samsung recalled the handset after it being on sale for just one month after reports emerged of users’ handsets spontaneously catching fire.

We’re expecting the Galaxy S8 to launch early next year, most likely around the time of Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress tradeshow, which runs from February 27 to March 2. It’s likely that the phone will actually be announced one day prior to MWC, on February 26.
