Samsung Galaxy S7 reportedly set for initial run of five million

Samsung is apparently planning an initial run of five million units for its forthcoming flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S7.

Sales of the Samsung Galaxy S6 were strong, but still not as much as Samsung was hoping for.

This may account for a recent report that claims a rather modest initial run of five million for the S6’s 2016 successor.

Reuters has drawn attention to the figure in a recent Electronic Times report. According to the South Korean publication’s ‘unnamed sources,’ the Samsung Galaxy S7 will come in two sizes this year.

Echoing Apple’s recent approach with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, the Samsung Galaxy S7 will come with a smaller (5.2-inches) regular version and a larger (5.5-inches) model.

The larger Galaxy S7 will also have a curved display, and will be called the ‘Galaxy S7 edge.’

Earlier in the year it was reported that demand for the Galaxy S6 edge was higher than Samsung expected, and that supply constraints may have cost it sales. This time around, Samsung is apparently splitting the initial run at 3.3 million Galaxy S7 handsets and 1.6 million Galaxy S7 edges.

This year saw the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge launched simultaneously, but both had a 5.1-inch display. The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Samsung Galaxy Note 5 with their larger displays appeared later in the year.
