A new trademark application suggests that the Samsung Galaxy S7 could have an always-on display.
With the Samsung Galaxy S7 reveal less than two weeks away, the related reports, leaks, and rumours are increasing in frequency. It’s inevitable as a new device enters its final stages of testing and certification.
This latest one is more intriguing than most. Dutch blog Galaxy Club (via SlashGear) has posted news of a recent US trademark registration application from Samsung for the term ‘Always On Display.’
It seems to suggest that the company’s forthcoming family of flagship phones – likely the Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge+, and Samsung Galaxy Note 6 – could make extended of their AMOLED screen technology.
We’ve seen plenty of devices that claim to have always-on displays, but this seems to be limited to smartwatches (like the Pebble Time) and e-book readers.
When it comes to smartphones, all we’ve seen are AMOLED screen-sporting devices from the likes of Motorola and Nokia that can provide heads-up information on their displays without switching on the full screen. Such displays aren’t ‘always on,’ though, and typically requires some kind of input from the user.

Could Samsung be looking to provide such heads-up information in a permanent low-power screen state on the Samsung Galaxy S7?
If rumours and recently leaked photos of the Galaxy S7 are anything to go by, then there could well be a meaty battery onboard to allow for such a feature.
