Samsung Galaxy S5 UK Lollipop rollout begins today

Hark, fair Samsung users, for good news is nigh – Samsung has just kicked off its Lollipop rollout for the Galaxy S5 in the UK.

This means that starting today, Galaxy S5 owners across the country will start seeing the system update option, offering up the latest Android 5.0 OS, as spotted by Sammobile.

This will, of course, come skinned with Samsung’s own TouchWiz overlay, hence why we’re only now seeing the update, many months after Lollipop first launched back in October.

While the new firmware is based on Android 5.0 (LR21T), we already know that Samsung is internally testing Android 5.0.2 (LRX22G) as we speak. Perhaps another update is due soon.

It’s worth mentioning that Lollipop’s Galaxy S5 rollout has began in Poland, Russia, Malaysia, and Spain last month, and is only now making it to humble Blighty.

It’s not the latest handset to the Lollipop party however, with many other Android phones – the Sony Xperia Z3, for instance – still seeing no sign of the update.

So what does Android 5.0 Lollipop mean for Galaxy S5 users? Quite a bit, actually. Google really went to town with Lollipop, adding a host of new features and a hefty UX redesign.

For starters, you’ll notice everything looks much flatter and more paper-like. That’s thanks to Google’s new ‘material design’ aesthetic that looks to clean up and unify the Android design style.

You’ll also be getting 64-bit chip support, lockscreen notifications, MirrorLink support, and improved battery life.
