Samsung Galaxy S5 sales break records over launch weekend

The Samsung Galaxy S5 sales have broken records over its recent launch weekend window.

According to data from smartphone retailer Carphone Warehouse, the Samsung Galaxy S5 broke sales records over the initial days of it going on sale after its April 11 release date.

Over those two days, Galaxy S5 sales were 150 per cent higher than that achieved by the Samsung Galaxy S4 for the same period last year.

“The advanced 4G capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy S5 were a huge point of interest and 95 per cent of customers purchasing the smartphone this weekend have taken out 4G contracts,” said a Carphone Warehouse spokesperson.

Before the S5 went on sale last week, the majority of network providers and retailers opened up pre-order registration for the 2014 flagship.

“Along with the brilliant sales, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has also had some of the biggest pre-order numbers ever, so we weren’t surprised to see the Samsung fans out in full force this weekend.”

“S4 sales at launch last year were not easy to beat, but the S5 has smashed them so far and it will be interesting to see if this continues over the coming months.”

Launched at MWC 2014 in February, the Samsung Galaxy S5 was only made available this month. It features a 5.1-inch full 1920 x 1080p HD Super AMOLED display running the latest Samsung Touchwiq UI over Android 4.4 KitKat.

It runs on a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 2GB of RAM and is powered by a 2800mAh battery.

Setting it apart from the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy S5 comes with IP67 water and dust resistant certification, an integrated fingerprint sensor and heart rate monitor.

In the rear is a 16-megapixel camera with a revamped autofocus system, coupled with a 2-megapixel front-facing snapper.
