Is this the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime?

The first photo of the metal bodied Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime may have just appeared online.

There have been rumours of a premium version of the Samsung Galaxy S5 for some time, with the variant offering a metal body and QHD 2K display.

Now the first purported image of the S5 Prime has cropped up on Reddit, showcasing its upgraded metal chassis, albeit in a rather dark shot.

It might well be that this is just a fancy replacement back cover for the standard Galaxy S5, but the fact it has the Samsung logo on it suggests it may well be legitimate.

According to the poster, his source suggested the S5 Prime will feature an all-over specs upgrade that will force the price of the handset higher than its flagship brother.

Rumoured specs include a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor with 3GB of RAM, which would be quite a step up from the S5.

The Galaxy S5 Prime release date has been tipped for June, but there’s also speculation that the premium device will be a limited edition, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Round.

A report suggested Samsung is struggling to cope with the higher production costs of the QHD 2560 x 1600p OLED panels for the S5 Prime, hence the full 1080p HD display in the Galaxy S5 itself.

The same happened with the Samsung Galaxy Round, the company’s first flexible display smartphone, which only launched in South Korea in limited quantities due to high production costs.

The image comes off the back of the news the LG G3 will definitely feature a 5.5-inch QHD 2560 x 1400p resolution display, which begs the question how is LG managing to make QHD 2K panels affordably when Samsung is supposedly having so much trouble.
