The first smartphone to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 CPU will be out in May, which has led many to speculate that it could be the Samsung Galaxy S5.
Qualcomm recently informed Japanese website RBMen that its follow-up to the hugely popular Snapdragon 800 chip would be available in shops in May.
This comes shortly after a Samsung executive confirmed that Samsung’s next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5, would be launched in March or April, suggesting a potential May roll-out into shops.
It doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure out that the two announcements might be related in some way.
Among its list of performance improvements over the current Snapdragon 800, the Snapdragon 805’s headline feature will be Ultra HD or 4K playback and recording. Despite these HD capabilities, the chip is apparently more power efficient when running HD video.
Elswhere, the Snapdragon 805 will be capable of clock speeds up to 2.5GHz, as compared to the Snapdragon 800’s 2.3GHz maximum.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 found itself outpaced (though not outsold) in the second half of 2013, with devices such as the Google Nexus 5 and the Sony Xperia Z1 running on the Snapdragon 800 while it made do with with the less capable Snapdragon 600.
While Samsung produces its own highly capable Exynos range of processors, production yield issues have led to Samsung’s continued reliance on Qualcomm chips for portion of its flagship phones. If it’s to go with a similar split with this year’s model, it’ll no doubt want to get in early with the choicest chip.
