Samsung Galaxy S4 Lollipop update confirmed for early 2015

Information on the Android 5.0 Lollipop is some seriously sought-after stuff, so fandroids everywhere will be pleased to hear the Samsung Galaxy S4 just got its update time-frame.

Looks like the latest version of Android will be landing on the ex-flagship early next year, although there’s still no specific date just yet.

It’s worth noting however that only Galaxy S4s running off Samsung’s own Exynos chip will be privy to the first wave of upgrades.

If a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 powers your Galaxy S4 – that’s model number I9505 – then you’re looking at an unspecified date later on. This goes for the Galaxy S4 Active – no. I9295 – too.

Not sure if your S4 is packing an Exynos chip? You’ll be looking at model number I9500 for a confirmation.

It’s always a bit of a mess for Samsung owners when a new Android update rolls around, largely because the Korean firm has such a high number of smartphone SKUs.

Late last month we found out that the Samsung Galaxy S5, the company’s current flagship device, will be getting the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade in December.

The reason is takes so long for Samsung, as well as many other OEMs, to upgrade their devices to Android is because they tend to offer their own custom skins.

Samsung, for instance, uses the TouchWiz interface, which it will need to modify to suit Google’s new OS and material design features.

Android 5.0 Lollipop includes a raft of new features, including 64-bit chip support, improved battery life, a new design aesthetic, and better cross-device communication.
