Samsung Galaxy S3 To Have 4.65in HD Super AMOLED Plus Screen

Korean DDaily has discovered that the as yet un-launched Samsung Galaxy S3 – or the Galaxy SIII, depending on how you prefer to write it – may have a non-pentile 720p HD Super AMOLED Plus display measuring 4.65in. That’s pretty much in line with what we were expecting, since rumours the screen would be Full HD were just a tad unlikely.

So what does “HD Super AMOLED Plus” actually mean? The AMOLED part refers to Samsung’s use of OLED technology, arguably the best screen tech to be found in mass production today. Organic Light Emitting Diode dispenses with separate backlighting, so that blacks are truly black (as it’s created by unlit pixels). This leads to phenomenal contrast, and power use is lower than LCD too when displaying dark content.

The “Super” part is essentially just marketing fluff, but “Plus” is really important, as until recently one of the problems with Samsung’s sAMOLED displays has been their pentile nature. This meant that individual RGB sub-pixels were visible, lending a slight blockyness to text and edges on close inspection.

As we saw on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note, that problem is mostly eliminated by cramming such a small screen with an HD resolution, but Plus had already fixed this issue on the Galaxy S2 without needing the pixel density.

So like the Galaxy Tab 7.7 before it, the Galaxy S3 will combine the best of both worlds, and the result should be absolutely stunning. In fact, it might even change our verdict in our Samsung Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X showdown, as that comparison was based on the S3 using a regular sAMOLED screen.

First phrase of the linked article on The Verge is "Rumors out of Korea are suggesting that Samsung's fabled Galaxy S III will have a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with 1280 x 720 resolution."

Did you miss the "Rumours" part or is the Trusted Reviews's certainty based on insider knowledge?

Thanks for your comment. Though we wouldn't be at all surprised if Ddaily was on the money here, afraid not - that's why the 'will' was in italics, it was meant to be sarcastic after the deluge of rumours already out about the S3. Sorry if that wasn't clear, it's now changed.
