Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy S3, its flagship Android phone for 2012. It has the specs to compete with the very best smartphones out there, but is it enough to topple the iPhone 5?

The Samsung Galaxy S3 features a 4.8in Super AMOLED screen, quad-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.4GHz. Ticking off a bunch of long-rumoured specs, it has an 8-megapixel main camera, 2-megapixel user-facing sensor, and is capable of capturing 1080p video.

It's 8.6mm thick and lightweight at 133g thanks to its plastic-based body. Naturally, the giant screen is topped with toughened glass, though.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and comes with 16GB of internal memory, with 32GB and 64GB editions also planned.

And - yes - it has a microSD slot. A slighty change of direction for Samsung, its body has a curvy back, inspired by "pebbles" according to Samsung.

There are a few neat software tweaks built-in too. For one, it tracks your eyes when in use (using the front camera) stopping the backlight from dropping off while you're reading. Neat, eh?

Just watched the event and ready to order two now (one for the wife). Shame the LTE one is going to take so long to arrive (I'd like to get an unlocked one just to future proof it but I'm not waiting that long) but still for me the phone looks just about perfect.

Can't imagine the 32gb and 64gb ones selling that well though given there is an SD card reader. Does anyone need 96gb of storage on a phone? I think 48 will do most people.

The S3 definitely looks like a hot contender for smartphone of the year. I can't help but feel that the screen is too big and will dissuade potential buyers. With that screen and eye tracking feature, that'll eat into the battery life. Your move Apple...

Wow, a real-life SD card slot! I feared they were becoming extinct. With any luck, Samsung will keep them alive.

Not sure about the 4.8in screen... I couldn't do without the extra half inch!
