Samsung head of communications JK Shin has confirmed that his company will be launching a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini device on October 11. He also confirmed that the device won’t be found wanting on specifications.

Last week we reported on invites sent out by Samsung for a launch event in Germany. The invites promised the launch of “something small” in the Galaxy family on October 11.

Now, just a day away from the big (or should that be little) reveal, JK Shin has confirmed our suspicions. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is about to get a little brother.

Interestingly, Shin also told reporters (as reported by ienews24) that the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini would not be an entry level device. Rather it would have a “full form factor,” which is pretty unique for an Android device in 2012. Typically, high end components are reserved for large-screen devices.

Shin believes that there is demand - particularly in Europe - for a powerful yet relatively compact smartphone. Looking at the success of a certain device called the iPhone over the past five years, we’d suggest that this is hardly a startling revelation.

Indeed, the Galaxy S3 Mini will likely go directly up against the iPhone 5 with its expected 4-inch display. The question is, will it go up against the Galaxy S3 with the same quad-core CPU and 8-megapixel camera?

According to assorted rumours, no it won’t. Rather, it’ll sport a respectable but by no means cutting edge dual-core CPU and 5-megapixel camera. We’ll know if Samsung really is backing its return to the compact high-end of smartphone technology in around 24 hours.
