Samsung and Visa have announced that the Samsung Galaxy S3 will be the official Olympic Games Phone during the London 2012 Games.

Working in partnership, the two brands are hoping to demonstrate the power of contactless payment using the S3's inbuilt NFC chip and the Visa payWave system - users will simply have to open the Visa app and hold their phone up to payment point.

Samsung and Visa sponsored athletes and 'trialists' will be given a 'showcase' version of the phone for use throughout the Olympic village, London and the UK, where they can take advantage of the UK's 140,000 contactless payment points.

“Mobile payment services enabled by NFC technology are gaining momentum around the world. The Samsung GALAXY S III has been created with our human needs and capabilities in mind and is the ideal device to showcase the ease and convenience of Visa’s mobile payment application at the London 2012 Olympic Games,” said DJ Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing team of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the company's latest flagship phone which launched to great fanfare last week. The handset features a 4.8in HD Super Amoled screen, a quad-core 1.4GHz processor, 8MP camera and has unique apps like S Voice, which lets you control the phone with your voice.

However, some have expressed disappointment with the design of the handset, citing its glossy plastic build as being a bit lacklustre. We got hands on with the handset last week and you can read our full in depth report and watch our hands on video here - Samsung Galaxy S3 Hands On. With the handset launching at the end of this month, you'll soon be able to try it out for yourselves.
