Samsung scored a hit with the Galaxy S II earlier this year with the handset winning awards and even managing to knock the iPhone 4 off its perch briefly – albeit 16 months after the Apple device was launched.

Now details have emerged of the follow-up device, unsurprisingly set to be called the Samsung Galaxy S III, or S3 if you prefer. An anonymous source (our favourite type of source) sent Phandroid.com an image captured from an internal Samsung presentation on smartphone evolution to carrier and retail representatives. It show the evolution ofthe Galaxy S line-up from the original to this new handset.

It shows that the Galaxy S III will feature a monstrous dual-core 1.8GHz Exynos 4212 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 12MP camera on the rear, and a whopping 4.6in Super AMOLED Plus HD display. All of which sounds quite like the soon-to-be-announced Galaxy Nexus, also from Samsung.

The phone will have NFC and LTE support but it will also get a pretty major redesign in a bid to ward off any potential legal battles with a certain other phone manufacturer based in Cupertino. It is also said to be slimmer than the Galaxy S II, meaning it will be less than 8.5mm thick.

The handset will come with the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android when it does arrive next year but Phandroid reports that the handset will still have four physical Android buttons (home, back, menu and search presumably).

While all this could of course be an elaborate ruse, considering the tie-ins with the expected details of the Galaxy Nexus, it’s not entirely impossible that these details could be on the money.

Thew phone won't be seeing the light of day until 2012, but we could be getting our mitts on one at CES in January so stay tuned for the latest news. Are you excited about the new Galaxy S handset? Let us know in the comments.
