The Samsung Galaxy S3 has retained the crown of the UK’s most popular smartphone for September 2012 in spite of the recent iPhone 5 release date, a new report has revealed.

According to the latest Mobile Tracker report from uSwitch, the latest figures of UK handset pre-orders and sales have found that despite the mass excitement surrounding the recent September 21st iPhone 5 release date, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has remained the UK’s leading handset for the past month.

Despite Apple citing record sales for the sixth-generation smartphone, and more than 5 million iPhone 5s shifted globally in the device’s opening three days, the company’s latest handset offering has lined up in a lowly fifth position in the UK popularity charts.

With stock shortages sure to have compounded the iPhone’s reportedly less than ground breaking UK launch period, the eagerly awaited device has ended its first calendar month on sale behind its predecessor, with the iPhone 4S ending September as the UK’s second most popular device.

Rubbing further salt into the wounds and adding the to the continuing Apple vs Samsung rivalry, the two other handsets to inflict surprise victories over the iPhone 5 are the Samsung Galaxy Ace and Samsung Galaxy S2.

“Everyone expected the iPhone 5 to knock the Samsung Galaxy S3 off the top spot as the nation’s favorite phone, but that hasn’t happened, yet,” said Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert at uSwitch. He added: “After six generations of Apple phones, the excitement around the iPhone 5 has failed to convert into immediate sales, but cynics should take note, this is the thinnest, lightest, fastest and best-looking iPhone ever.

“In weeks to come we’ll likely see Apple sneak up the ranks but for now at least Samsung can continue to enjoy its impressive run of five months at the top of the tree.”

Entering the realms of reality following months of fast flowing rumour and speculation, the iPhone 5 was officially unveiled last month with a new 4-inch Retina display replacing the iPhone’s former 3.5-inch screen standard.

A completely revamped handset, the iPhone 5 boasts a new 7.6mm thick form factor with a dual-core A6 processor powering the show alongside iOS 6 and the usual collection of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage capacity options.

Ditching the longstanding 30-pin dock connector in favour of a new 8-pin Lightning port, the iPhone 5 has also seen its 3.5mm headphone jack moved to the handset’s base whilst a revised 8-megapixel iSight camera lines up on the rear.

This is a travesty of epic proportions. The iPhone 5 is the most revolutionary product Apple has ever released.

* The iPhone 5 has a revolutionary 1136x640 resolution that gives is a beautiful 326ppi.
* It has a revolutionary kind of processor called dual-core.
* iPhone 5 comes with 4G LTE, faster that the iPhone 4S super-fast 3G.
* iPhone 5 comes with the revolutionary all-digital Lightning connector. Apple definitely makes the greatest ports and connectors. They are magnificent works of art that are beautiful and wonderful to look at.
* The UI is a thing of beauty. You can create folders, put apps in there, and even more apps/folders to other pages as you please.
* The maps app is amazing. I never knew that the streets of New York City were so squiggly and architecturally-unstable, but the iPhone 5 maps app has allowed me to see how the roads in America truly are.

Most importantly...
* The iPhone 5 has over 200 improvements from 4S. The 4S had over 200 improvements from the 4. The 4 had over 200 improvements from the 3GS. That's over 600 improvements the iPhone 5 has over the iPhone 3GS. Simply revolutionary.

I don't see why people are flocking for the Samsung Galaxy S3 when the iPhone 5 blows it out of the water with the above-mentioned features.

The iPhone 5 may be the best handset Apple have ever produced, but it's not the best handset passé. Whilst I appreciate the technology held within the iPhone 5, in real terms, it has one more row for apps, that's it! After remaining iPhone loyal for my last 5 phones, I have finally cut lose and signed up for a Samsung Galaxy 3S and honestly, it destroys the iPhone 5 on every count. Why do you think Apple tried so hard to ban the sale of this phone in the US? Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Apple (Apple TV, iPad 2, MacBook Pro, iMac, iPod 4th Gen) but they really have to be more innovative. iPhone, dull, dull, dull..... a massive success of marketing over function, and I know, I've been falling for it for years.... I implore anybody wanting an iPhone 5, just check out the Samsung first, I did, NO regrets and a massive saving on my monthly contract even though the base price is very similar. Apple Marketing 1, gullible public 0...

Some times you have to laugh at the over enthusiasm as demonstrated above. I'm 67 shortly and rarely show enthusiasm over anything even slightly teckie.(though when I first encountered plastic I thought that it might catch on). I've had mobile phones since they looked like a brick and I looked like a plonker carrying it round. so I have got through a few of them. Design wise we have gone from large to small, in fact, so small my fingers always hit two keys on some of them. Then as I approached senility they started to get bigger again but lost their keyboards. Wonder of wonders touch screen keyboard, at last I could see the letters on the Xperia x10i without my reading glasses. Bliss, I could hit the correct key almost first time. And the interweb became accessible whilst out walking or driving. How could I have ever managed without this before? (hang on a minute whilst I get my tongue outa my cheek). So, to the debate of the century ie. Does the Higgs boson particle really exist and if so will it improve my life? OOOPS SORRY wrong review!
Which is the better mobile phone (back on course now) Samsung Galaxy S3 or Apple's Iphone 5?
Well I have an S3. I can see the keyboard. I can dial numbers and can hear who ever I call. which is good. And now that I have found out how to turn facebook off, and stop that infernal bleeping I'm happy with it. It appears to be a more than adequate communication device, though why on earth I should wish to make an animated cat purr by stroking it belly I really don't know! There are many functions of the S3 that fall into the category of "very nice yes, but why?" I assume that the Iphone 5 is much the same. At the last upgrade I was asked If I wished to wait for the iphone5. (Which is like asking me if I wanted to get on the next bus which happens to be going in the same direction). Having established that it was to have a smaller virtual keyboard than the S3 I opted for Mr Samsung's pride and joy. Works well, rings when someone calls. Gets through to those I ring most times- Would I buy an S3 or an iphone 5? Nope! Having been with the same provider since the brick days, they give me what I ask for what ever the tariff. Such nice people.

I consider the article may well be reflective of the current sales levels, but with the iphone market kicking in for xmas, this could all evolve into a different story come the new year. Samsung galaxy s3 is a groovy android, and deserves the recognition, and iphones are now just common!

Iphone 5 just came out and Galaxy S3 already beat it? Weird. I am not certain if the article is trying to get smartphone users to hinder from trying out iphone5. I've used both iphone5 and galaxy s3 now and I like both phones. I just wish I have the luxury of using both phones as a daily driver.

There are a lot of things galaxy s3 offers that iphone5 lacks and vice versa. I think it all comes down to users to determine which phone suits them better. I think Iphone4s vs Galaxy S3 is a better comparison than Iphone5. Even look at the reselling price of these two phones. It's a lot more comparable than iphone5. I believe this article was written a bit too early. It's not like Samsung isn't going to come out with the next Galaxy. Not fair to compare a new product with an old one. Well, at least let the users decide first right?

iPhone + iOs6 = Life's biggest disappointments.

More than 200 improvements? Is maps one of them? Most of these are bug fixes.

The iPhone was a revolutionary product in its 1st incarnation. Since then, it hasn't really moved on (apart from bug fixes and minor tweaks).

Today, when I put my iPhone5 next to one of the latest Android devices, the display looks old and tired.

Why are the icons not live? Why is the wallpaper static? Folders? Don't make me laugh.

And don't even get me started on multi-tasking ...!!

Also, the new iPhone5 is lighter - yes. It is actually flimsier too. Only Apple can downgrade a product and make its fanboys think they are getting an upgrade. This is their true skill.

iPhone5 + io6 = the biggest waste or £600 in my life.

Given that the iPhone 5 was released on the 21st of September, giving it 9 days of sales time that month, and the Samsung was already an established top seller, its not really surprising that Apple were behind in sales.

I think October's sales figures will give a much more realistic view of the market share

Well Flor, all you have done in your post was explain how the the 5 is better than the 4S. And certainly, if that is all you are looking at you will have a hard time understanding the article.

Here's a little clue ... the Galaxy S3 is a DIFFERENT PHONE than the 4S and it is made by a DIFFERENT COMPANY than Apple. To understand why people are buying it you have to compare the 5 to the S3 and not to the 4S.

October 27, 2012, 1:50 am

Well, that assumes that xmas sales would only be higher for Apple. Xmas sales are likely to affect Samsung as well, so I don't see it really making a difference in who's ahead in the sales figures.
