The Samsung Galaxy Note has sold 5 million in as many months

The Samsung Galaxy Note has shipped 5 million units in just five months, proving that there is clearly a consumer demand for a 5.3in smartphone/tablet hybrid like this - assuming a hefty chunk of the devices shipped have sold.

The Galaxy Note managed 1m sales in its first two months, so its popularity appears to be on the increase. Hopefully the awkward term “phablet” that has been coined to describe this product category will not rise in popularity to match.

According to Samsung, China, Spain and France make up the largest share of purchases in the international markets. Other countries in Asia and Europe such as Hong Kong, Taiwan and Germany also showed growth, especially in December 2011.

However, the stylus-equipped handset sells best on its home turf. Korea accounts for a whopping 67% of total shipments worldwide. It is unclear at the moment if those totals represent sales to retailers or through to end users.

As with a number of Samsung Galaxy products, the Note is yet to get its Android Ice Cream Sandwich update, though it is in the works.
