Samsung Galaxy Note 4 features to include retina scanner?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 features may include a retina scanner, according to a new teaser from Samsung itself.

A tweet from the official Samsung Exynos account may have just teased a major new feature coming with the Galaxy Note 4 later this year.

The tweet shows a picture of a generic handsets with an eye and detection reticule around the iris, which is definitely a strong nod to the prospect of retina recognition for upcoming Samsung devices.

Adding to the teaser, Samsung’s accompanying tweet for the image talks of a forthcoming security enhancement for its devices using Exynos chips.

“Security can be improved using features unique to us. That’s what we envision,” came the Samsung Exynos tweet with the hashtag #ExynosTomorrow.

To add fuel to the already strongly burning fire, Samsung also includes the words “unlock the future” in the image, which if it isn’t an allusion to retina device unlocking we’ll eat our hats.

Samsung has been introducing more sensors of late to its devices, including a fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and heart rate sensors in devices like the S5 and the Samsung Gear Fit.

The Galaxy Note 4 is expected to be launched at the Berlin-based IFA conference in early September.

Along with this potential eye scanner, the Note 4 should come with a 5.7-inch inch QHD 2560 x 1440p resolution display running on an Exynos 5433 octa-core processor and 3GB of RAM.

Rumour has it that it will come with 32GB of internal storage as standard, most likely expandable by microSD card like other Galaxy devices.

Running Android 4.4 KitKat from the box, the Note 4 is also tipped to come with a 12-megapixel rear camera and optical image stabilisation.

Wouldn't iris recognition be more likely? Helluva lot easier to do and probably only needs the front camera (especially if they increase the res of the FF camera).

Iris recognition is much more likely since retinal scanning is quite invasive and hard to do. Even iris imaging is difficult without an IR light source and camera (particularly with brown-eyed users). It could be eye-vessel matching, which can be done in visible light, on the whites of the eyes. Or eye-shape/color matching. Certainly not retina and probably not iris.
