The 2014 edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 improves upon last year’s model with a much sharper screen, a faster processor and improved S Pen software.

Much like its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition is an Android tablet that separates itself from the pack with its use of an S Pen digitiser stylus.

However, this time around its basics specs are fairly impressive too. The 2014 Galaxy Note 10.1 has a high-resolution 2,560 x 1,600 pixel LCD screen, a slim 7.9mm body and light 535g weight (Wi-Fi edition).

The processor it uses depends on whether you opt for the Wi-Fi only, the 3G or the 4G versions. The 3G and Wi-Fi editions use an Octa-core processor running at 1.9GHz, similar to the processor used in the Galaxy S4 in some markets (but not the UK).

The 4G edition has a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, the same seen in the Galaxy Note 3. Although the Octa-core processor sounds more impressive, the 4G chipset is likely to offer slightly better performance – judging by recent benchmarks.

All version of the 2014 Galaxy Note 10.1 have 3GB of RAM and offer a microSD memory card slot to expand upon the 16/32/64GB of internal memory. It’s likely that not all iterations of the tablet will be widely available in the UK, though, so don’t bank on getting a 4G 64GB Note 10.1 just yet.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition Design
Perhaps responding to the common criticism that Galaxy-series devices can feel a little cheap and plasticky, the 2014 Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 uses a new kind of finished designed to give a warm touch, a little like leather.

Texturing of the rear and the stitching around the outside of the back panel all give off this pungent ‘leather effect’, but we’ll see what it’s like in person when we get our hands on one shortly.

Just as important as the ditching of glossy plastic, the tablet is both smaller and lighter than last year’s Note 10.1 model, in part thanks to the reduced screen bezel.

On the rear you’ll find an 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash, which is partnered with a 2-megapixel camera on the front.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition S-Pen

The S-Pen stylus has been given a revamp in the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition, but it’s primarily in software rather than hardware. Using the S-Pen you can now bring up an Air Command menu that gives you easy access to the most used stylus features including S Note. We'll be back with a full hands-on of the new tablet shortly.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition will be available in black and white shades and will go on sale in Q3 2013.
