Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Mega 5.8 officially announced with May release date

Samsung has officially announced the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and the slightly smaller Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8, both with a European release date in May.

Details on the duo of Samsung Galaxy Mega handsets leaked online earlier this week, but now Samsung has officially confirmed the existence of the huge smartphones.

“We are aware of a great potential in the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing, and more,” said JK Shin, Samsung CEO. “We are excited to provide another choice to meet our consumers’ varying lifestyles, all while maintaining the high-quality features of the award-winning Galaxy series.”

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 boasts a 6.3-inch LCD HD screen of unknown resolution, with Samsung marketing it as the “best of both worlds” as lies awkwardly between a tablet like the iPad mini and a smartphone like the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4.

Packing a 1.7GHz dual-core processor, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 plays host to a 3,200mAh battery, runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and is 4G LTE compatible.

The 6.3-inch Mega model will launch in two models with internal storage sizes of 8GB or 16GB, both expandable via microSD cards up to 64GB. The monolith handset also has an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.9-megapixels up front.

The slightly smaller Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 offers the same camera specs, but sports the reduced screen size of 5.8-inches and drops the HD resolution to 960 x 540 qHD. It also packs a lesser 1.4 dual-core processor.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 will only ship in one version offering 8GB of internal storage, also expandable by microSD cards of sizes up to 64GB.

Both handsets offer the new features launched on the Samsung Galaxy S4 last month, including Group Play, Samsung WatchOn, Samsung Link, S Translator, ChatON, S Travel and Story Album.

The cameras on both Samsung Galaxy Mega devices boast the new Samsung Galaxy S4 photography features including Drama Shot and the new Sound and Shot, which captures 9 seconds of sound and voice together as the picture is taken to capture what Samsung is calling “moments”. This new feature is potentially akin to the HTC Zoe software seen in the HTC One.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 will launch globally in May, starting with Europe and Russia. Pricing plans and availability will vary according to market and will be revealed closer to the release date.
