Samsung Galaxy Gear compatibility extends to Galaxy S4 and other devices

Samsung has extended the compatibility of its Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch to more devices, such as the flagship Samsung Galaxy S4.

The smartwatch would originally only work with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in the UK, but Samsung has increased the number of devices that can pair with the wrist-worn tech.

Through the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update, Samsung will add Galaxy Gear compatibility to the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 today.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Galaxy Mega 5.8 will all soon become compatible through a “separate software update”, which will be available at the end of October.

“Extending the Galaxy Gear compatibility to more Galaxy devices reflects our deep commitment to continuing to deliver our consumers enriched mobile experiences”, said JK Shin, CEO and President of the Samsung Mobile. “Through a significant effort to enhance and enrich Samsung Galaxy experience, Samsung continues to empower our users to have smart freedom in their mobile lives with Galaxy Gear.”

Samsung Galaxy Gear Features
The Samsung Galaxy Gear is the first smartwatch from the South Korean manufacturer and offers a 1.63-inch 320 x 320p resolution Super AMOLED screen for viewing various smartphone notifications.

Powered by a 800MHz processor, the Galaxy Gear uses Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to smartphones, letting you make calls and use other (rather limited) functions.

It packs a 1.9-megapixel camera, 4GB of memory, a speaker, a pair of microphones, accelerometer and gyroscope. Unfortunately it doesn’t have GPS, so it’s not a sports watch replacement.

Of course, you can simply use the Galaxy Gear as a watch as it has various faces you can choose from. There are other apps you can use, including Evernote, eBay and Runkeeper.
