Despite the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch having yet to make it to retailers, latest reports have suggested that a second-generation offering is already in the works.

With the Samsung Galaxy Gear officially unveiled alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 earlier this month, new reports out of the company’s native Korea have suggested that a Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 is already been prepared ahead of a potential CES 2014 unveiling next January.

Claiming that the first Samsung Galaxy Gear was to test consumer reactions to the smartwatch market before refining the basics, the Korean Digital Times has cited unnamed sources in claiming a second-generation model could be just months from unveiling.

Building on the camera hosting, touchscreen display bragging foundations of the original model, the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will reportedly add integrated GPS for improved fitness tracking capabilities alongside compatibility with a broader range of Android handsets.

At present the Samsung Galaxy Gear is only compatible with the newly announced Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the 2014 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. The manufacturer has stressed that it will make more handsets compatible with the techy timepiece, including the flagship Samsung Galaxy S4, in the near future.

Officially unveiled at IFA 2013 at the start of the month, a Samsung Galaxy Gear release date has been set for September 25.

Packing a 1.63-inch AMOLED display with a 320 x 320 pixel resolution onto your wrist, the Samsung Galaxy Gear will let you receive call and message notifications without having to take your phone from your pocket. It adds a 1.9-megapixel camera within the strap as well as integrated speakers.

The Samsung Galaxy Gear price has been set at a lofty £299. It can be bundled alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for an eye watering £848.
