With Mobile World Congress looming large, we are being inundated with manufacturer’s attempts to get-in-there-first when it comes to launching new smartphones – and Samsung is no different.

Last year, the South Korean company launched the Galaxy Ace, Galaxy mini, Galaxy Fit and Galaxy Mio ahead of Mobile World Congress 2011 and today it has launched updates to two of these budget handsets ahead of the show in Barcelona next week.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace 2, pictured above, has a more rounded look to it that the original, and now features a dual-core 800MHz processor. The screen size has also been given a boost, from a 3.5in display to a 3.8in WVGA screen. It has the same five megapixel camera on the rear capable of recording 720p video.

The Galaxy Ace 2, which will come with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card) will run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) skinned with Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI.

Turning to the Samsung Galaxy mini 2, pictured below, the screen’s size has been slightly boosted from a 3.14in display to a 3.3in HVGA screen, while the processor has been updated from a decidedly slow 600MHz to an 800MHz beast – though only single-core this time.

The Galaxy mini 2 will come with a three megapixel rear camera and VGA front-facing camera, 3GB of internal storage (which Samsung calls “vast”), 512MB of RAM and will also run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) with TouchWiz on top.

In terms of availability, Three has already been in touch to say it will be offering both budget handsets on both contract and Pay as You Go beginning in April. No concrete pricing was available from Three however.
