Two new Samsung phones have been outed in photo form: the Samsung Galaxy A5 offers a mid-range alternative to the Galaxy S5 while the A3 has a smaller screen and lower-end specs.

Samsung is about to re-brand how its mid-range phones are marketed judging by the latest Galaxy A5 and A3 leaks.

Photos of the as-yet unannounced phones suggest they’ll use a similar unibody-style design as the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, which is the first recent high-end Samsung phone to trade chrome effect plastic in for genuine aluminium.

There have been two sets of Galaxy A5 and A3 leaks. First we saw the photo above of the phones alongside each other, which was swiftly followed-up by a slew of press renders, which are the images that usually accompany an official phone announcement. You can see these below.

Could we be right on the doorstep of an official launch?

As yet there’s some contention as to what these phones will actually be made of, though.

Despite an obvious similarity to the Galaxy Alpha, which uses a plastic rear cover and aluminium sides, there are reports that these phones are both 100 per cent aluminium and – according to SamMobile – perhaps a “unique material” that feels cool like metal. But isn’t.

Whatever the truth, both the Samsung Galaxy A5 and A3 show a clear move away from the style of the Samsung Galaxy S5, to one with squarer edges.

Galaxy A5 and A3 specs

The Samsung Galaxy A5 is expected to feature a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen of 720p resolution while the processor is reportedly a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410. That’s the new 64-bit edition of the popular Snapdragon 400. Leaked benchmarks also suggest it has a 13-megapixel camera.

Further down the phone spectrum, the Galaxy A3 is likely to have a smaller screen and a lower-resolution camera. Here are some of the official-looking renders posted by PhoneArena:
