Samsung develops advanced anti-shake mobile camera

Samsung has just revealed a new mobile phone camera that will drastically reduce image blurriness and improve low-light performance.

Most smartphone users will be familiar with the tendency of their images to be blurry, particularly when the shooting position isn’t steady and in low-light situations.

Samsung seems to have addressed this with its latest smartphone camera sensor. This 13-megapixel camera module has an optical anti-shake facility that can correct angular errors of up to 1.5 degrees.

As reported by Tech-On, this equates to anti-shake performance of roughly twice that of digital cameras currently on the market.

Evidently related to this optical image stabilisation technology, Samsung claims that the new camera module can produce shots that are an impressive eight times brighter than its previous efforts.

As we’ve seen with the likes of the Nokia Lumia 925, strong optical image stabilisation can markedly improve low light performance in smartphone cameras, which is one of the inevitable drawbacks to having such tiny image sensors. Decent OIS means that the shutter can be left open for longer, letting in more light without running the usual risk of blurry photos.

Samsung’s new camera module retains roughly the same dimensions as its previous models, and will apparently offer low power consumption. Production will begin in the first half of 2014, and we should see the unit in various non-Samsung smartphones as well as future Galaxy devices.
