Samsung could launch luxury ‘Gear S2 Classic’ smartwatch variant

We already knew Samsung was plotting a brand new smartwatch for September.

However, it turns out that the company might now be setting up to launch a second Gear-branded wearable at the same time.

According to a new report by Dutch tech site Galaxy Club, Samsung is going to release two Gear S2 variants at the IFA 2015 tradeshow in Berlin on September 3.

The first is the Gear S2 proper, which we already knew about thanks to a less-than-subtle teaser from Samsung at this month’s ‘Unpacked’ event.

The second, however, is reportedly called the Gear S2 Classic, as seemingly revealed in the source code of Samsung’s website.

As this device is only mentioned by name in source code, we have absolutely no clue about how it’ll be different from the Gear S2.

Our best guess is this: exactly the same specs, but with a more ritzy, premium design.

Peddling luxurious spin-offs of smartwatches is nothing new. LG did it with the G Watch Urbane and Apple did it with the ludicrously priced Apple Watch Edition.

As such, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise for Samsung to flog a style-focused variant of the Gear S2 at a plumped-up price point.

The Gear S2 is expected to launch in just over a week, shipping with Tizen on-board, a round face, and a rotating bezel for added control functionality.

Rumoured specifications include a 1.2GHz Exynos 3472 dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, a 250mAh battery, and a 360 x 360 pixel display resolution.

Do you think Samsung should sell a fancy version of the Gear S2 with hiked-up pricing? Let us know in the comments.
